Best places to shop in South Delhi

The past decade has witnessed a massive inflow of global retail chains into India, making it at par with other shopping destinations in the world. This has given a great boost to our economy while simultaneously giving competition and raising the standards of local brands. Today, all the top metros in the country have access to international labels and wide variety ranging from budget to luxury options.

While metropolises like Mumbai and Bangalore do have myriad malls and shopping centres, Delhi is arguably the largest market and a pioneer of this recent shopping revolution.

The capital is renowned for being a well-planned city with lush green parks, wide-open spaces and vast areas of land. These characteristics have enabled the creation of enormous malls and shopping centres replete with restaurants, nightclubs, salons, spas and even theme parks. However, Delhi’s popularity as a shopping mecca dates way back before the advent of these gigantic shopping avenues. Shopping back then was focused around roadside markets and districts with narrow alleys. These age-old markets are still around and lined with stalls selling fabrics, silverware, brass articles, art and antiques, leather and books among other things. Retaining their flavour of Indian culture, the markets regularly have Mehendi and henna artists around.

While districts like Chandni Chowk and Sarojini Nagar have gained iconic status due to mentions in popular culture, Khan Market and the Tibetan Market are also teeming with history and culture. Some of these markets have received an overhaul with high-end designer boutiques and boast of the most expensive commercial real estate in the country.

South Delhi, known for being one of the oldest and poshest areas of Delhi, includes some of the most historical localities. Self-contained and multi-faceted, South Delhi contains a milieu of old and new elements in terms of architecture and culture. From quaint shopping districts to swanky malls, it houses some of the most renowned shopping avenues in the country. Shopping in Saket Delhi, cannot be complete without a visit to the iconic Select Citywalk.  Launched in 2007, it is the first and one of the largest shopping complexes in the city. Situated in the neighbourhood of Saket, the mall is teeming with restaurants and eateries offering all types of global cuisines. It also has salons and wellness centres along with several other recreational facilities for all age groups. This popular mall houses several flagship stores from budget and high street to uber luxury. The stores constantly have events and on-going offers and are open till late all the way upto 11pm.

Also lending a different vibe to South Delhi are two urban villages – Hauz Khas Village and Shahpur Jat. Cobbled streets and narrow alleys apart, these urban villages have undergone a massive makeover. Today, these refurbished districts have transformed Delhi’s shopping and nightlife with a range of designer boutiques and an endless line of popular restaurants, lounges and clubs.
